- Counsel/Counseling comes from the Hebrew root word: יָעַץ yaats. (To advise, counsel: — advise, advisers conspire, conspired, consult, consulted). • Kings and Leaders called on their advisors - counselors about major decisions and before going to war.
- Counselors would usually have a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral Degree from a College or University. Some may obtain a ministerial degree from a Bible College like pastors and Christian Counselors. Many Pastors are not trained counselors, some offer counseling services based on their Biblical worldview knowledge.
- Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental & Psychological Disorders. (DSM5) The DSM looks at the disorder. Counselors are trained and study various psychological diagnoses and treatment plans based on the DSM.
- A Counselor will listen and assess your concern or disorder. Based on the DSM5, they will diagnose your problem and provide a treatment plan to accomplish a stated functional conclusion. Via zoom Counselors can only service clients in states where they are licensed. • You will be asked why are you seeking their service. You will be required to fill out a questionnaire with background information from childhood to present, etc.
- A good Counselor is also your greatest coach, they are invested in your success and healing. Caution! Some counselors may want to keep you in a cycle of dependence on them for monetary reasons.
- Biblical Counselors who incorporate The Word of God should be able to bring a balanced perspective to your situation.
- A Counselors’ diagnosis of you can be used by the government to determine if you can implement your 2nd amendment rights. They are required to carry liability insurance.
- Counselors charge fees ranging from $50 - $500/Hr.
- Counselors are not psychologists or psychiatrists but they can refer you to either of them for further testing and drug prescription.
- When you visit a Counselor, people will ask you, "What's wrong with you?"
